Clinical Training

I attended St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, West London from 1981 until graduation in 1986. My post-graduate training in internal medicine, infectious diseases & gastroenterology took place at St George’s Hospital (infectious diseases), St Mark’s Hospital and Chelsea & Westminster Hospital (gastroenterology and nutrition) in London and in Kingston, Ealing and Hillingdon Hospitals in the Home Counties (gastroenterology and general internal medicine). I spent three years (1993-5) in full time academic study as an MRC training fellow investigating the possibility of stimulating protective immune responses via the mucosal associated lymphoid tissue of the gut.  This provided detailed training in mucosal immunology. This work was submitted as a thesis to the University of London leading to PhD.

From 1997 to 2000 I worked as Specialist Registrar for Prof Mike Kamm and Prof Alistair Forbes at St Mark’s Hospital, London and continued my endoscopy training in therapeutic endoscopy including polypectomy and EMR at the Wolfson Endoscopy Unit. I completed my clinical training and developed particular expertise in the management of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases, intestinal failure & short bowel syndrome and severe functional abdominal conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome.

I was appointed as Consultant Physician & Gastroenterologist in Derriford Hospital in 2001
