About Dr Chris Hayward
- I have a broad range of interests and areas of expertise;
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease; management, treatment and surveillance of Ulcerative Colitis & Crohn’s disease. I have over 15 years experience managing individuals with IBD as part of a clinical team, including the use of all treatment modalities including biologics (Infliximab/Humira). I am local NACC medical representative.
- I am an accredited bowel cancer-screening colonoscopist. I have a major interest in, and wide experience of therapeutic endoscopic procedures including polypectomy and endoscopic mucosal resection.
“I have recently returned from visiting Japanese centres of excellence to see how they manage early GI cancer with endoscopic treatment including endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). ESD enables an en bloc resection (single fragment) of large benign and early (t1) cancer, This reduces the risk of local recurrence following endoscopic resection when compared to the alternative technique (peicemeal Endoscopic mucosal resection) . ESD also allows a more accurate histological assessment of the lesion which is important if the lesion has focus of malignancy.
